A file selector is not universal compatibility

A file can appear in a dialog and still fail to open or save because of its codec, contents, or unsupported features. There is no single read/write compatibility matrix for the entire app.

In these tables, general selector means .jpg, .jpeg, .png, .webp, .bmp, .tiff, .avif, .heic, .heif, and .ico. The general single-image selector omits .ico. These are the filters in the reviewed code; for example, .tif does not appear in every dialog even when an engine can read TIFF.

Important limitations

• AVIF/ICO in size tools: the selector offers them, but the Resize/Crop/Canvas save-format map does not include them and has a JPEG fallback. Do not rely on this combination or on matching extension and contents: convert a copy to PNG/JPEG first.
• HEIC/HEIF: depends on pillow-heif support and the package and format capabilities. HEIC conversion may be disabled when support is unavailable.
• Quality: does not mean the same thing across codecs. Convert may show the control for TIFF even though saving does not use that parameter. Compress does not use the value for every format.
• Compressed PNG: may be reduced to 256 colors. Do not treat it as an optimization that necessarily preserves an identical image.
• Alpha: JPEG cannot retain transparency. Choosing Transparent in Canvas does not change the file to a transparent format; LQIP/Base64 always produces opaque JPEG.
• Metadata: the viewer lists known fields. No visible rows does not prove that all EXIF, XMP, or IPTC is absent.

Animations and multipage files

Convert, Compress, Resize, Crop, Canvas, Remove Background, Extract Palette, Watermark, EXIF editing, and EXIF cleaning have checks that reject animations or multiple pages in their protected processing paths. Watermark also validates the logo.

OCR, the metadata viewer, and LQIP/Base64 are not full-sequence processors. They do not promise to recognize, export, or preserve every TIFF page or animation frame. Prepare individual images when you need complete results. Convert produces static GIF output; its general input filter does not normally offer GIF.

Size presets

These dimensions are included in the code. They are not a promise that they match each social network’s current requirements. Check the destination’s rules before publishing. Resize applies the exact dimensions and may distort a photo with a different aspect ratio.
